Out from Athens
by Pandelis Karayorgis, George Kokkinaris

A cross-generation and cross-genre collaboration bringing together two musicians who share a common city of origin and who find a common music thread in their distinct backgrounds. This beautifully recorded set of piano and bass duets and solos from the summer of 2023 in Athens, Greece, features a mix of original compositions and improvisations.

George Kokkinaris is one of the most active younger musicians currently working in Athens’s improvisational and new music scenes. Besides playing a major role in organizing concerts and workshops, he also has been co-publishing the magazine NewMusic.gr, which strives to broaden the new music community scene in Greece. After spending some time in Berlin as a performer and improviser, he returned to Athens, where he has also been playing in improvisation dance settings, exploring movement, and studying contemporary dance history. More recently, he has been organizing a series of choreography & music composition workshops.

Pandelis Karayorgis, a fellow Athenian, has been living in Boston for well over thirty years pursuing a career in jazz and improvised music. This is his first collaboration with a Greek musician in that many years! Together, they find common ground in some of Karayorgis’s compositions, and also in a language that is shared in contemporary music and free jazz alike.

The recording session was organized by George at a studio in Athens with an excellent Fazzioli piano in August of 2023. After a couple of rehearsals in the days before, the session unfolded seamlessly in one afternoon
